MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

BRANDON BURKE

Brandon is the founder of Odyssey Freediving. He is a freediving instructor, spearfishing guide, and underwater photographer based in Monterey Bay, California. After learning to dive and spearfish in Florida, he moved to the golden coast of California for the allure of big surf, cold water, and hunting kelp forests every day of the week. With over a decade of experience, Brandon has dedicated his life to sharing the underwater world with others.

He is a PFI, NAUI, and PADI certified freediving instructor known for his patient and supportive teaching style. He believes in empowering his students with the knowledge and skills they need to dive safely and confidently.

As a spearfisherman and patroller of his local coast, Brandon has a deep respect for ocean ecosystems. He teaches ethical spearfishing practices, emphasizing the importance of sustainable hunting, and conservation of marine life.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • In Scuba Diving you use compressed air tanks and a breathing apparatus. You are are reliant on gear and technology to explore underwater. In freediving, your mind and body are the technology.

  • Basic swimming skills are required for freediving courses, but you do not need to be an advanced swimmer. Comfort in the water is essential.

  • The duration of learning freediving varies depending on the individual and the course. A basic freediving course typically lasts 2-3 days.

  • Essential equipment includes a mask, snorkel, fins, wetsuit, weight belt, dive socks and gloves. Most gear is available for rental.

  • You need all your freedive equipment plus a speargun, fishing license, knife, and any accessory gear such as floatlines, floats, stringers, flashlight etc.

  • Breath hold techniques, relaxation, and proper training can help increase breath-hold times. Courses teach these techniques in detail.
